Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been sentenced to an additional 13 years in prison over the Ksh588 million corruption and money-laundering case involving funds allegedly embezzled from the county during his tenure.

The Milimani High Court handed down the sentence on Monday, November 2, with the former governor facing a combined jail term of 13 years or fines totalling Ksh21 million.

Justice Harrison Barasa sentenced Waititu to five years in prison on Count 10, four years on Count 11 and a further four years on Count 12.

The court also imposed fines amounting to Ksh21 million, which Waititu is required to pay. Should he fail to settle the fines, he will serve the alternative custodial sentences prescribed for the respective counts.

"Having considered the mitigation tendered by the accused persons, the prosecution's submissions, the nature and the gravity of the offenses, and the applicable statutory provisions, I hereby sentence the accused persons as follows. On count 10, Ferdinand Waititu is fined Ksh10 million in default, imprisonment of 5 years," the judge ruled while delivering the sentence on one of the counts.

However, the latest sentences will not result in additional time behind bars for Waititu, as the court ordered that they run concurrently with his existing 12-year prison term imposed in February 2025 in a separate corruption case.

This means the former governor will serve the new sentences alongside his current jail term rather than having the 13 years added to his existing sentence.

"The sentence imposed here in the High Court had already given directions on how they will run, therefore they will run as directed by the High Court in its ruling on October 14, 2026," the judge added.

In paragraph 317 of the judgment, Justice Rose Ougo had directed that the sentences arising from the three money-laundering counts run concurrently with those previously handed down under the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.

Meanwhile, Waititu's wife, Susan Wangari, also faced penalties over her involvement in the three money-laundering counts.

The court fined her Ksh12 million on Count 10. On Count 11, she was sentenced to two years in prison or an alternative fine of Ksh2 million.

She was further ordered to pay Ksh8 million on Count 12, bringing the total fines imposed against her across the three counts to Ksh22 million.
