The Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) has declared Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru the winner of the Ol Kalou Constituency by-election after he garnered 35,440 votes in the poll held on Thursday, July 16.
Announcing the final results on Friday, July 17, IEBC Returning Officer Antony Njiraine confirmed that Waweru comfortably defeated United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah, who polled 5,450 votes.
Wilson Mwaniki Kigwa of the Jubilee Party came in third with 198 votes, followed by Stephen Wanyoike Waithaka of the National Liberal Party (NLP), who received 103 votes.
Timothy Kamau Kariuki of the People's Movement (PM) secured 51 votes, Edwin Kariiri Muchiri of PNU garnered 28, Abdifatah Hussein Abdullahi of FPK received 19, Edward Mathenge Mwaniki of KMM got 16 votes, while Rachael Wangui Njoroge of PDP finished last with 11 votes.
IEBC said Ol Kalou Constituency had 73,480 registered voters, with 41,656 casting their ballots, representing a voter turnout of about 57 per cent.
The victory delivers a significant win for DCP in Nyandarua County, with the contest largely framed as a political showdown between allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and President William Ruto's UDA.
The race drew national interest as top leaders from both camps traversed the constituency campaigning for their candidates, making it one of the year's most closely watched by-elections.
Waweru succeeds the late David Njuguna Kiaraho, whose death created the parliamentary vacancy.
After declaring the results, the electoral commission commended all those involved in the exercise, saying, "We thank the voters of Ol Kalou Constituency, candidates, political parties, election officials, security agencies, observers, the media and all stakeholders for contributing to a peaceful and orderly electoral process."
The Commission also confirmed that the official by-election results had been uploaded to its public results portal.
Waweru's victory is expected to bolster DCP's presence in the Mt Kenya region as the party intensifies efforts to broaden its support base ahead of the 2027 General Election.
