The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has reminded businesses and other taxpayers to submit their tax returns before the August 20 deadline to avoid penalties and remain compliant.

In a notice issued on Monday, August 17, the tax authority urged taxpayers covered by the monthly filing obligations to complete their returns before the deadline.

The returns due on August 20 include Value Added Tax (VAT), Excise Returns, Turnover Tax (TOT), Monthly Rental Income Tax (MRI), and VAT on Digital Marketplace Supply.

"Make sure umefile returns za Value Added Tax, Excise Returns, Turnover Tax, Monthly Rental Income Tax, and VAT on Digital Marketplace Supply on or before August 20," KRA stated.

Taxpayers are required to access their iTax accounts and select the relevant tax obligation to begin the filing process.

The reminder comes as some taxpayers continue to report challenges with the iTax platform, including system errors when attempting to submit their returns.

Others have complained that sales and purchase invoices for July are yet to appear in the pre-populated sections of their VAT returns on iTax, making it difficult to complete the filing process.

KRA attributed some of the difficulties to network fluctuations and advised affected taxpayers to switch networks, use another browser or wait before attempting to file again.

"Kindly note that this is a network fluctuation error. Try using a different browser or give it some time before you can try again," the authority said.

The taxman also urged taxpayers uploading returns to ensure their files had been properly validated before submission.

"If uploading a return, ensure that you are uploading a properly validated file," KRA added.

Despite the reported technical challenges and calls from some taxpayers for an extension, KRA maintained that the filing deadline remains August 20.

Taxpayers affected by the listed obligations have therefore been urged to complete their filings before the deadline to avoid possible penalties arising from late submission.
