Several people are feared dead after a helicopter crashed near Mt Ololokwe in Samburu County on the morning of Wednesday, August 19, triggering an urgent rescue and security response.
According to a security update seen by Vantage Ke, the aircraft reportedly went down in a deep and difficult-to-access section of the mountain, complicating efforts to reach the crash site.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has confirmed the incident to Vantage Ke, although details regarding the number of people aboard, their condition and the circumstances surrounding the crash were yet to be established by the time of publication.
A witness described the crash site as difficult to access and called for immediate assistance to reach those on board.
“Right there, there is a helicopter that has fallen. It is quite deep and far, but do send urgent help so that people can be rescued,” the witness said.
Smoke and flames were reportedly seen at the scene as residents and emergency responders mobilised to assist, while efforts to reach the wreckage continued.
An Air Tropic rescue helicopter was also reported to have arrived at the scene as teams assessed the situation and attempted to assist those affected.
A preliminary police report indicated that six tourists and a pilot were aboard the helicopter when it crashed. However, the identities and condition of those on board had not been officially established at the time of publication.
KCAA had also not confirmed reports of fatalities as rescue operations and investigations into the crash continued.
Rescue and verification teams were being mobilised as authorities worked to access the crash site and establish the full extent of the incident.
Members of the public have been urged to keep away from the area and allow emergency, security and rescue teams unobstructed access. Motorists and travellers near Mt Ololokwe have also been advised to remain alert as emergency teams move into the area.
Authorities cautioned the public against sharing unverified casualty figures or identities as efforts to establish the situation on the ground continued.
Mt Ololokwe has grown into a popular tourist attraction in Kenya, drawing visitors to its distinctive terrain, spectacular scenery and panoramic views.
Also known as Ol Donyo Sabache, the mountain is a prominent flat-topped landmark in Samburu County, rising dramatically above the surrounding dry landscape.
Its striking scenery has also made it a sought-after destination for photography and videography, attracting thousands of visitors over the years.
As of now, the situation remains developing, with rescue and verification operations ongoing.
