Travellers flying between Nairobi and Mombasa next month could find themselves onboard Kenya Airways' (KQ) largest aircraft while paying less than half the normal ticket price.
The national carrier has quietly rolled out heavily discounted fares on the busy Nairobi–Mombasa route ahead of the return of its Boeing 777-300ER fleet, offering passengers a rare opportunity to experience the long-haul wide-body aircraft on a domestic flight for as little as Ksh6,600.
A review of Kenya Airways' booking platform by Vantage Ke revealed significant fare reductions on selected flights operating between July 13 and July 16, the same period the airline is scheduled to deploy the Boeing 777-300ER on the route.
The discounts are among the steepest currently available on the route. Economy class tickets that ordinarily start from Ksh13,245 are now selling from Ksh6,600 on selected departures, while business class fares have dropped from Ksh24,585 to Ksh12,335.

Passengers booking return journeys are also benefiting from the promotion. Economy return tickets, which typically cost from Ksh26,360, are available from Ksh13,195, while business class return fares have been reduced from Ksh47,995 to Ksh24,275. The fares are inclusive of taxes, fees and applicable discounts.
The pricing changes appear closely linked to the planned reintroduction of the Boeing 777-300ER into KQ's operations. The airline's reservation system currently lists the aircraft as the scheduled equipment for several Nairobi–Mombasa flights during the four-day period.
Vantage Ke independently verified the aircraft assignment by progressing through the booking process to the final reservation stage. At checkout, passengers were presented with the Boeing 777-300ER's distinctive wide-body seating layout and cabin configuration, confirming the aircraft's planned deployment on the route.
Travellers were also offered optional add-ons, including seat selection from Ksh1,175 and additional baggage packages from Ksh2,610.
Senior KQ officials confirmed to Vantage Ke on Sunday, June 21 that the limited deployment and discounted fares are part of a strategic flash promotion designed to give domestic travellers a first-hand experience of the aircraft ahead of its wider return to service.
The move marks a significant milestone in the comeback of an aircraft type that has largely been absent from Kenya Airways' network in recent years.
According to recent schedule adjustments, the Boeing 777-300ER is expected to resume service on the Nairobi–Johannesburg route from July 3 before being deployed on the airline's flagship Nairobi–London Heathrow service from July 17.
Once fully reintroduced, the aircraft is expected to operate five of Kenya Airways' seven weekly London flights, replacing the smaller Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner on those services.
While deploying a long-haul aircraft on the one-hour Nairobi–Mombasa route may appear unusual, aviation experts note that airlines often use domestic sectors when reactivating aircraft. Such flights can help crews familiarise themselves with the aircraft, allow engineers to verify maintenance work, and provide an opportunity to conduct operational checks before launching long-haul services.
Industry analysts also note that carriers occasionally use busy domestic routes to test booking systems, ticketing processes and pricing strategies before deploying aircraft on major international routes.
The Boeing 777-300ER remains one of the world's most capable long-haul passenger jets, renowned for its range, passenger capacity and cargo-carrying capability.
Kenya Airways scaled back its Boeing 777 operations as part of a broader restructuring programme aimed at reducing operating costs and aligning capacity with market demand.
In 2016, the airline subleased one of its Boeing 777-300ER aircraft to Turkish Airlines under the "Operation Pride" turnaround strategy, a move intended to cut excess capacity and improve the carrier's financial position.
Now, nearly a decade later, the aircraft's return is generating excitement among aviation enthusiasts and travellers alike. For many passengers, the chance to fly aboard a Boeing 777-300ER on a short domestic hop between Nairobi and Mombasa, while paying less than half the usual fare, could be one of the most attractive aviation deals of the year.
