Orange Democratic Party (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga has made his first public appearance following weeks of speculation and growing concerns about his health.

The veteran politician appeared to address the concerns through a series of photographs obtained by Vantage Ke, showing him celebrating his 83rd birthday in a private gathering.

The images captured Oburu cutting a birthday cake alongside two of his wives and a group of Nairobi Hospital staff, marking the occasion in an intimate setting.

Interestingly, Oburu's birthday falls on the same date his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, died. Raila passed away on October 15, 2025, making the day both a personal milestone and a moment of remembrance for the ODM leader.

In a lengthy message accompanying the photographs, Oburu reflected on turning another year older while paying tribute to his late brother, whose death continues to hold significance for the Odinga family and their supporters.

"Today, October 15, is far more than just a date on the calendar, it is a sacred intersection of life and eternity. Marking another year of my own birth on this very day brings a bittersweet reflection, knowing it is also the date my beloved younger brother, Baba Raila Amolo Odinga, departed to be with the Lord," a statement from Oburu said.

The ODM leader went on to describe the coincidence of their birthdays and Raila's death as a profound connection that transcends physical separation.

"To have been born on this day and for you to have departed on this same date is a divine testament to the invisible thread that binds our souls. Physical separation cannot touch a brotherhood written in the heavens," he added.

Oburu's appearance comes amid heightened public interest in his well-being following weeks of speculation about his health. He was notably absent from the event held at Migwena Cultural Grounds in Siaya County to mark the first anniversary of Raila's death. Several leaders, including Mama Ida Odinga and ODM deputy leader Simba Arati, reassured the public that the party boss was in stable condition.

According to Mama Ida, Oburu was still recovering and had been advised by his doctors to avoid attending politically charged gatherings.

The Siaya Senator has missed several high-profile events in recent weeks, fuelling speculation about his health. Reports subsequently emerged that he had been flown to the United Kingdom for treatment of an undisclosed medical condition.

Since the reports surfaced, members of the Odinga family have repeatedly dismissed claims that Oburu's health had deteriorated. The family has also faced mounting public concern following reports that he had returned to Kenya to continue receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital.

On Tuesday, October 6, Oburu's secretariat dismissed reports of his alleged death as malicious propaganda and fake news, urging Kenyans to disregard the claims.

In his birthday message on Thursday, October 15, the ODM leader appeared to acknowledge the support he had received from medical personnel as he continued his recovery, praising Nairobi Hospital staff for their dedication and care.

"Thank you to the dedicated Nairobi Hospital staff for your exceptional professionalism and kindness, and to the ODM fraternity, wonderfully represented today by Trustee Elder Joshua Kawino, for standing steadfastly with our family," he said.

The birthday celebration also coincided with the first anniversary of Raila's death, adding an emotional dimension to what would ordinarily have been a personal celebration for the veteran politician.

Raila's death on October 15, 2025, marked a significant moment in Kenya's political history, given his decades-long influence on opposition politics and the country's democratic development.

For Oburu, the occasion brought together two deeply personal milestones: celebrating his 83rd birthday and remembering a younger brother with whom he shared family ties and a long political legacy.
