South Sudan has rejected reports claiming that its embassy in Nairobi and other diplomatic missions abroad have been shut down.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said in a statement issued on Thursday, August 13, that the Nairobi mission had experienced a temporary technical problem that disrupted some of its operations.
The ministry said efforts were ongoing to resolve the issue and restore normal services.
“The Ministry has noted reports by media outlets concerning the operations of the Embassy of the Republic of South Sudan in Nairobi, Kenya, and claims regarding the alleged closure of other South Sudanese diplomatic missions abroad,” the statement read.
It clarified, “The Embassy in Nairobi has not closed. A temporary technical issue affected some of its operations, and the matter is being resolved.”
The statement followed reports that the South Sudanese embassy in Nairobi’s Kilimani area had been closed on Tuesday amid claims that it had failed to pay several months' rent.
Some visitors were reportedly unable to access the mission after arriving to seek consular services during the disruption.
The reports sparked concern among South Sudanese nationals in Kenya who depend on the embassy for consular assistance and other diplomatic services.
The Nairobi mission had reportedly faced a similar situation in November 2025 when it was temporarily closed over alleged unpaid rent before resuming operations.
However, the latest statement from South Sudan's Foreign Affairs Ministry made no reference to rent arrears, instead insisting that the embassy remains open.
The ministry also dismissed reports alleging that South Sudanese diplomatic missions in other countries had been shut down.
It urged the public and media to confirm information concerning its diplomatic missions through official government channels.
The clarification comes ahead of a planned leadership transition at the Nairobi embassy, where newly appointed Ambassador Simon Juach Deng is expected to take over in September.
