The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has alleged that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua communicated with two individuals linked to the murder of mental health doctor Victoria Mutiso, including a key suspect in the case.
Speaking during a press briefing on Friday, August 7, DCI Director Mohamed Amin claimed investigators had uncovered evidence showing Gachagua was in contact with one of the principal suspects.
"Unfortunately, what clearly came out of this is that Honourable Rigathi Gachagua was in communication with one of the main suspects who was feeding him with this information," Amin said.
Amin further alleged that detectives established that the former Deputy President had also communicated with the boda boda rider accused of transporting the suspects involved in the killing.
"We were able to establish that apparently he also appears to have been in communication with the boda boda rider," the DCI Director disclosed.
He maintained that if Gachagua intended to assist the investigation, he ought to have passed the information to detectives instead of withholding it.
"If really Rigathi Gachagua meant well for these investigations, because we are not trying to deal with politics, then he should have shared the information with investigators," Amin added.
The remarks came as the DCI provided a comprehensive update on the probe into Mutiso's killing, revealing that detectives had made major breakthroughs through forensic examinations and intelligence-led investigations.
According to Amin, investigators have identified the alleged mastermind behind the murder, the motorcycle rider who transported the gunman and several other suspects believed to have played different roles in planning and carrying out the attack.
The DCI also alleged that rogue police officers were involved in the murder, claiming some coordinated the operation while another officer is suspected of supplying the firearm used in the fatal shooting.
Among those implicated is a police constable attached to Karinde Police Post under Kikuyu Police Station, who has since been arrested after investigators identified him as the officer alleged to have fired the fatal shots.
Amin further disclosed that Mutiso had narrowly escaped an earlier assassination attempt on July 7 after two men riding a motorcycle allegedly pointed a gun at her along Ngong Road near Junction Mall, but she managed to flee unharmed.
The DCI boss added that detectives are pursuing more leads and are examining whether some of those implicated in Mutiso's murder could also be connected to another high-profile shooting reported in 2025.
Dr Mutiso was shot dead on the morning of Wednesday, July 29, at about 9am, at the junction of Mbagathi Link Road and Mawenzi Road in Nairobi's Upper Hill area.
