Former Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa has officially resigned from President William Ruto's United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, bringing her membership in the ruling party to an end.
Addressing the media on Thursday, July 30, Jumwa said the decision followed "deep reflection, heartfelt prayer and extensive consultations" with the people she represents.
The former Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage Cabinet Secretary announced that her resignation takes effect immediately, although she stopped short of revealing the political outfit she intends to join next.
"After deep reflection, heartfelt prayer and countless consultations with the people I serve, I have made one of the most difficult decisions of my political life," Jumwa said.
"From today, Aisha Jumwa Katana is no longer a member of the United Democratic Alliance," she added.
While declining to name her next political destination, Jumwa said she would make the announcement at the appropriate time.
She accused President Ruto of betraying her loyalty, claiming she had stood firmly by him during difficult political moments but was later sidelined after failing to secure a role in his administration.
Jumwa also alleged that she had been denied entry to State House during a meeting between the president and Coast leaders, describing the incident as part of a pattern of humiliation.
"And perhaps you are not aware, but I was thrown out of State House when Coast leaders had come to see you. I sent you a message, and you never responded to me. I have been humiliated. Even when you come to Kilifi, it is as if you no longer recognise me," she said.
She maintained that despite backing Ruto throughout his political journey, she had ultimately been abandoned, urging the president to respect the democratic rights of both herself and the people of Kilifi.
Jumwa added that her next political move would be determined through consultations with Kilifi residents, insisting they should be free to choose their preferred leaders without interference.
The former Cabinet Secretary has repeatedly expressed interest in contesting the Kilifi gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, making the race a likely next step in her political career.
Her departure comes amid a growing wave of defections from UDA. Among those who have announced their exit are Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata and Nyandarua Governor Badilisha Kiarie, both of whom have joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), alongside several MPs from the Mount Kenya region and other leaders.
