A Kenyan national has been arrested in Zanzibar for allegedly operating tour and excursion services in breach of the island’s tourism laws.
The Kenyan was detained on August 18 alongside two other foreign nationals after they were allegedly found engaging in tourism activities reserved for Zanzibaris, according to a public notice by the Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT).
“The Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT) wishes to inform the general public and all visitors to Zanzibar that it has apprehended three foreign nationals who were found conducting tour and excursion operations in Zanzibar contrary to the laws and regulations governing tourism activities in Zanzibar,” the commission stated.
Under the Zanzibar Tourism Act, tour operations and shuttle boat businesses are reserved for local Zanzibari citizens.
The authorities, however, did not specify the tourism services the Kenyan was allegedly providing or disclose the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
The commission said the arrests were carried out in collaboration with the Immigration Department.
The action serves as a warning to foreigners operating tourism-related businesses in Zanzibar, where authorities are seeking to tighten regulation of the sector and ensure that tourism revenues benefit the local economy.
The commission reminded foreign visitors that conducting tourism-related businesses on the islands may be subject to local ownership rules, licensing requirements and other regulations.
It further warned that individuals found operating tourism businesses in breach of the law could face additional legal and administrative action.
Visitors were also advised to book excursions and other activities through licensed tour operators and legally recognised tourism service providers.
According to the commission, the measures are aimed at promoting lawful, safe and quality tourism services across Zanzibar.
The arrest comes amid a series of incidents involving Kenyans facing legal action abroad.
Last week, a 56-year-old Kenyan was among several suspects detained in Zambia over alleged cybercrime targeting the state ahead of the country’s August 13 general election.
