The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has dismissed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from his role as Secretary General after the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) adopted a resolution during a meeting held on Monday, June 22.

The decision was made at Chungwa House during a NEC session chaired by ODM National Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, with party leader Oburu Odinga in attendance.

ODM said the NEC reviewed a report submitted by the Internal Disputes Resolution Committee (IDRC), which had been assigned to investigate a complaint lodged against Sifuna in his capacity as Secretary General.

"After going through the report and the findings of the IDRS under article 74 section 2 of the party constitution, the NEC unanimously adopted the committee's recommendation and endorsed the removal from office of Senator Edwin Watenya Sifuna. Effectively, Senator Sifuna ceases to be the Secretary General of the ODM party," acting Secretary General Catherine Omanyo stated.

In explaining the move, the party referenced remarks previously made by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal on the need to uphold discipline within political parties.

"The day any official of a party becomes above the law, so to speak, will be the day of the funeral of political party democracy in Kenya. If such a situation were to occur as a matter of fact, this tribunal would never sanction the same by law, for such would be an affront to the law," the tribunal stated.

ODM further maintained that Sifuna had been given several opportunities to respond to the allegations facing him, but that he chose to communicate through his lawyers.

The latest decision comes just days after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) ruled that Sifuna had not been granted a fair hearing before his earlier removal from office.

The tribunal found that there was no proof that Sifuna had been informed that his conduct would be discussed during the previous NEC meeting.

At the same time, the tribunal noted that its ruling did not bar ODM from initiating fresh disciplinary proceedings against the senator, provided any action taken complied with the law, the party constitution and internal regulations.

The standoff has been linked to widening divisions within ODM, particularly regarding the party's ties with President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration, following the cooperation agreement signed between ODM and the government in March 2025.

Sifuna has emerged as one of the strongest critics of the arrangement, putting him at odds with senior party figures who favour closer collaboration with the ruling coalition.
