Safaricom-sponsored golfer Samuel Njoroge will be under pressure to extend his lead in the race for qualification to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics when the PGK Equator Tour moves to Sigona Golf Club in Kiambu County.
Njoroge heads into the seventh leg of the tour with 3,852 points, 962 points clear of second-placed Dismas Indiza, after winning the sixth leg in Nakuru.
The Sigona tournament, which teed off on Thursday, August 27, and runs until Sunday, August 30, has attracted 47 professional golfers battling for crucial points as the season gathers pace.
The competition is also providing an important pathway for Kenya’s professional golfers seeking to improve their chances of featuring at the 2027 Magical Kenya Open and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Njoroge has emerged as the man to beat after a strong run of form, but he knows his position at the top could come under threat if his rivals close the gap.
The golfer is particularly motivated at Sigona after narrowly missing out on victory at the same course last year.
“I remember last year here at Sigona; it was a tight race, and I lost to Kibugu on the final hole. This time around, I want to make sure I take it home and maintain the winning momentum after Nakuru. The season is looking good for me, although there is a lot of pressure because, as you know, staying on top is not easy,” said Njoroge.
His closest challenger, Indiza, has accumulated 2,890 points and is enjoying an impressive season, while Greg Snow occupies third place with 2,540 points.
Fellow Safaricom-backed golfer Mohit Meduratta is fourth on 2,430 points, with David Wakhu completing the top five on 2,110 points.
With the gap at the top still within reach, the Sigona leg could prove significant in shaping the battle for supremacy among Kenya’s professionals.
Njoroge’s victory in Nakuru, where he finished with 280 points in a field of 48 players, gave him another boost at the top of the Order of Merit. Now, he will be seeking another strong performance on the par-72 Sigona course to strengthen his position and build momentum towards the bigger targets ahead.
