The Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Salim Mvurya, has confirmed that Talanta Stadium could host its first match in November or December as Kenya steps up preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking during an inspection of the facility on August 19, Mvurya said Kenya could stage matches at the stadium before the continental tournament, with preparations also ongoing at the Raila Odinga International Stadium.
“We could have opening matches anytime in November or December, and we can play matches even before we host AFCON,” CS Mvurya stated.
He said holding matches ahead of AFCON would provide an opportunity to test the facility and identify and resolve any challenges before the tournament begins.
Mvurya added that preparations would also focus on the national team, with the football technical team expected to develop a roadmap for strengthening the Harambee Stars ahead of the tournament.
The CS said the government wants the national team to be adequately prepared for AFCON while urging Kenyans and the private sector to support the team.
The inspection established that Talanta Stadium is 94 per cent complete, with the remaining works largely consisting of final touches.
The main pitch is ready and awaiting stitching, while the two remaining training facilities are 50 per cent and 40 per cent complete, respectively.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF), which has been inspecting tournament facilities across the region, has given Kenya positive assessments. However, Kenyan officials remain engaged with CAF over outstanding works required to achieve full compliance.
Security and spectator management systems have also been enhanced. 60 of the planned 91 turnstiles have been installed, while work is continuing on the stadium's skyboxes and media facilities.
Mvurya further said the government was developing supporting infrastructure for the tournament, including a railway connection, a dedicated power substation and feeder roads.
Kenya is preparing to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
