The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) has confirmed that two of its students died following a road accident involving a bus that overturned along the Kisumu-Awasi Highway.
The university said the families of the deceased students had been informed and were making arrangements to have the bodies transferred to the morgue.
“We remain deeply saddened by the loss of our two students in the tragic accident. Their parents have been informed and are making arrangements to collect the bodies for transfer to the nearest morgues,” the university stated.
In its latest update, TUM said 15 students were still receiving treatment at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
One of the injured students was transferred to the High Dependency Unit (HDU) at Aga Khan Hospital for specialised care.
Meanwhile, 14 other students who had been admitted to Lisa Hospital were treated and discharged.
The students were travelling to Kisumu County on Friday, August 7, to attend the funeral of former TUM student leader Elvis “Beast” Otieno when the accident occurred.
New footage obtained by Vantage Ke shows some students hanging from the side of the bus shortly before the crash. Other students could be seen sitting on the roof, while some stretched their hands through the windows as they interacted with mourners travelling in other vehicles to the funeral.
Preliminary reports indicated that the bus lost control, veered off the road and overturned, leaving several occupants injured.
Photos and videos from the scene showed the 50-seater bus had sustained significant damage, with the front section and windscreen among the most affected areas.
TUM has appealed to the public to refrain from circulating unverified reports or graphic images and videos related to the accident.
The university urged the public to depend on official communication for updates while respecting the privacy of the affected students and their families.
The latest development comes as the TUM community joins Otieno’s family and friends in mourning, with his funeral service scheduled for Saturday.
