Residents of Nairobi and Kisumu have been advised to prepare for water supply interruptions beginning Friday, September 11, as water service providers in the two cities carry out repair and infrastructure improvement works.
In Nairobi, the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) announced on Thursday, September 10, that it would temporarily shut down the Sasumua Water Treatment Plant to allow for emergency repairs on the Sasumua-Kabete pipeline.
“Nairobi wishes to inform the public of a scheduled shutdown of the Sasumua Water Treatment Plant to facilitate emergency repair works along the Sasumua-Kabete pipeline,” the company stated.
The shutdown will commence at 6am on Friday, September 11, and is expected to end at 8am on Saturday, September 12, causing an estimated 26-hour interruption in water supply.
Several parts of the capital will be affected, including Westlands, Lavington, Kileleshwa, areas around the University of Nairobi and Valley Road, Kilimani, Hurlingham, Upper Hill, Dagoretti, Kawangware and Waithaka.
In Westlands and Lavington, residents and businesses along Riverside Drive, Chalbi Drive, Convent Drive, Gitanga Road, Kunde Road, Hedred, Mbaazi, Masanduku, Leloghi Gardens, Ole Ndume Road, King'ara Road and Riara Road are among those expected to experience the disruption.
Water supply will also be affected in parts of Kileleshwa, including Kandara Road, Gichugu Road, Mazeras Road, Mbooni Road, Othaya Road, Kaputei, Laikipia Road, Githunguri, the DoD area, St George's School and Tembere Road.
The University of Nairobi's main campus, customers served along the Mamlaka line and those living or operating along Valley Road have also been listed among the affected areas.
In Kilimani and Hurlingham, the disruption will affect areas along Argwings Kodhek Road between Chaka Road and Hurlingham, Hurlingham Shopping Centre, Mtito Andei Road, Kindaruma Road, Rose Avenue, Lower George Padmore Road, Daystar University, Denis Pritt Road and Coptic Hospital.
Upper Hill will also experience the interruption, with affected areas including Matumbato, Kiambere and Masaba, Mawenzi Road, sections of Hospital Road, Kenya Road and Elgon Road, as well as Kenyatta National Hospital and KEMRI Flats along Mbagathi Way.
Nairobi Water further listed several locations in Dagoretti, Kawangware and Waithaka, including Lower Gitanga Road, Sunset Estate, Sohill City Estates, Kagira, Kagondo, Muhuri Road, Upper Kabiria, Mithonge and Kamwanya.
Kisumu Supply
Meanwhile, parts of Kisumu will also experience a planned water interruption on Friday, September 11, although the disruption is expected to be shorter than the one announced in Nairobi.
The Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO) said the interruption would allow for the construction of meter chambers and trial pits, as well as the installation of valves and meters aimed at improving the efficiency of the water supply system.
Areas expected to be affected include Milimani, Nyamasaria, Nyalenda A and B, the Kisumu Central Business District and Dunga Estate.
"This scheduled disruption is necessary for the construction of meter chambers, trial pits, and the installation of valves and meters to enhance system performance,” KIWASCO stated.
Residents in both Nairobi and Kisumu have been urged to store enough water ahead of the planned works and make the necessary arrangements to reduce the impact of the supply interruptions.
