A passenger who was trapped inside a Dreamline bus after it collided with a trailer along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway near Taru, Kwale County, has died, raising the death toll to two.
Sub-County Police Commander Lydia Mambo confirmed that six other passengers were injured in the early morning crash on Wednesday, September 23.
The bus was involved in the collision near the Taru-Mackinnon Road section of the highway, with the impact causing extensive damage to its front section.
Several passengers were trapped inside the bus following the crash, prompting an emergency rescue operation involving police and other responders at the scene.
One of the passengers was reportedly found trapped and bleeding inside the wreckage as rescue teams worked to free those caught in the damaged vehicle.
Police Land Cruisers were used to transport some of the injured passengers to nearby health facilities for treatment, while other occupants were assisted out of the bus.
The crash also affected traffic flow along the busy highway, with motorists approaching the Taru-Mackinnon Road section advised to exercise caution as emergency teams worked to clear the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the collision had not been immediately established. Police are expected to investigate the incident to determine how the Dreamline bus and trailer collided.
The crash reportedly mainly affected passengers travelling in the VIP section of the bus.
The Nairobi-Mombasa Highway is one of Kenya's busiest transport corridors, carrying passenger buses, trucks, trailers and other vehicles travelling between Nairobi and the Coast.
The latest incident adds to a series of serious crashes reported along the highway involving passenger vehicles and heavy commercial trucks.
On September 16, another fatal collision occurred at Kapiti Plains along the same highway after a passenger matatu collided head-on with a trailer, leaving several people dead and others injured.
Rescue and recovery operations continued at the scene of Wednesday's crash as authorities worked to assist those affected and clear the wreckage from the highway.
