Kenya's banking sector is witnessing an intensifying battle for affluent customers, with lenders increasingly rolling out exclusive financial products as they compete for the country's fast-growing wealthy population.
The latest entrant into the race is I&M Bank, which on Monday, July 6 unveiled the Mastercard World Elite Metal Credit Card, becoming one of the newest banks in East Africa to offer Mastercard's highest-tier consumer card on a metal platform.
While the launch introduces another premium product to the market, it also highlights a broader shift within Kenya's banking industry, where institutions are increasingly targeting high-net-worth individuals with luxury travel perks, concierge services and exclusive lifestyle experiences rather than traditional banking incentives.
According to I&M Bank, Kenya's high-net-worth population grew by 14 per cent between 2015 and 2025, a trend that has prompted banks to rethink how they attract and retain wealthy customers whose spending patterns extend beyond local markets.

Speaking during the launch, I&M Bank Regional Chief Executive Officer Kihara Maina said affluent customers are increasingly looking for products that complement their global lifestyles rather than simply offering financial services.
"Kenya's affluent professionals and global executives no longer measure prestige by what a card represents on paper, but by what experiences it unlocks in the world," Maina said.
"The Mastercard World Elite Credit Card is our answer to that shift. It is engineered for those who travel often, shop and entertain widely, and expect their bank to move at the same pace as their ambitions."
The development comes as Kenya's top lenders continue expanding their premium banking divisions, targeting executives, entrepreneurs, investors and professionals whose international travel and spending have risen steadily over the past decade.
Rather than competing solely on interest rates or transaction costs, banks are increasingly differentiating themselves through value-added services such as airport lounge access, concierge support, travel insurance and exclusive partnerships with hotels and global retailers.
Mastercard said the partnership reflects changing consumer expectations among Kenya's wealthiest clients, who increasingly demand financial products that offer seamless access to international services.
"The Mastercard World Elite Credit Card represents the very pinnacle of our premium portfolio, and this collaboration with I&M Bank reflects the growing sophistication and global mobility of the clients we serve in Kenya," said Shehryar Ali, Mastercard's Country Manager for East Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands.
"This is far more than a product launch. It is a commitment to connecting Kenya's most discerning consumers to their everyday passions, ensuring they have seamless, secure access to the same world-class privileges and priceless experiences available anywhere in the world."
Among the features offered are unlimited airport lounge access for cardholders and one guest, travel and medical insurance, concierge services, fraud protection and access to Mastercard's global lifestyle platform.
Notably, I&M Bank said eligible customers will not be required to meet a minimum spending threshold to retain access to the card's premium benefits, a move that could increase competition as banks seek to differentiate their premium offerings.
The launch underscores how Kenya's premium banking segment is becoming an increasingly competitive battleground, with lenders betting that tailored financial products and exclusive experiences will prove more effective than conventional banking services in winning over the country's growing class of affluent customers.
