Kanini Kega, a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), has alleged that his security detail has been withdrawn.
In a short statement posted on his social media accounts on Monday, July 20, the legislator disclosed the development while raising concerns about his personal safety.
"My security has been withdrawn. But I have God," Kega wrote.
Vantage Ke could not independently verify Kega's claims or confirm whether the security detail had indeed been withdrawn by the relevant authorities.
The claim comes days after Kega was allegedly attacked while travelling home from Ol Kalou town during campaigns for the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
The incident is said to have happened on the night of July 13 after the lawmaker, an ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, attended a Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) campaign rally in support of candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau.
According to Kega, he noticed he was being followed from Ol Kalou town before armed men intercepted his convoy at Kasuku Centre in the neighbouring Ol Jororok Constituency.
The EALA MP and his driver are said to have abandoned their vehicle and escaped on foot as the assailants advanced.
Kega further claimed that a local family offered him shelter after the incident. While hiding, he alleged that armed officers continued pursuing him and pointed guns at both him and his driver.
"Kenyans, you can see I'm under attack. I've been chased by armed police officers. They pointed guns at me.
"We were only able to escape. You can see I'm being hosted by these children. Ruto, you are not going to kill us unless you kill all of us," the visibly shaken legislator said.
Kega was previously an ally of President William Ruto before the two fell out following the impeachment of Gachagua in 2024.
Police are yet to issue an explanation regarding the alleged withdrawal of his security. However, some opposition leaders have interpreted the move as an attempt to intimidate or silence critics of the government.
