Democracy of Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed claims by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) linking him to suspects in the murder of mental health doctor Victoria Mutiso, insisting he is ready to record a statement but only at his Wamunyoro residence.
Speaking in Kiambu on Friday, August 7, the former Deputy President rejected allegations by DCI Director Mohamed Amin that he had communicated with two people implicated in the case, including one of the principal suspects.
Instead, Gachagua challenged Amin to travel to Wamunyoro if investigators wanted his statement, maintaining he would not report to DCI headquarters.
"I was in Wamunyoro, and if you think someone called me, why don't you come to my home and I will write a statement because I cannot come to you. I am above the level of DCI and the police," Gachagua stated.
The former Deputy President argued that the DCI was attempting to link him to the murder because he had disclosed sensitive details about the investigation, which he claimed could only have come from within the police service.
"You are saying that the suspects spoke to Riggy Gee because you do not want to admit that police officers are the ones giving information to Kenyans and leaders. You have lost the civil service," the ex-Deputy President added.
Gachagua also maintained his earlier accusations against Amin, alleging that the DCI boss was trying to cover up the murder on the instructions of Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen.
He further claimed to possess a dossier containing the names of police officers allegedly involved in the attack on worshippers at Witima Church.
His remarks came hours after Amin accused the former Deputy President of communicating with individuals linked to Mutiso's murder during a press briefing on Friday.
According to the DCI chief, investigators established that Gachagua had been in contact with one of the main suspects, who allegedly supplied him with information about the ongoing probe.
"Unfortunately, what clearly came out of this is that Honourable Rigathi Gachagua was in communication with one of the main suspects who was feeding him with this information," Amin said.
Amin further claimed detectives discovered that Gachagua had also communicated with the boda boda rider accused of ferrying the suspects involved in the fatal shooting.
"We were able to establish that apparently he also appears to have been in communication with the boda boda rider," the DCI Director disclosed.
The DCI boss argued that if Gachagua genuinely intended to assist investigators, he should have passed the information to detectives instead of keeping it to himself.
The allegations emerged as the DCI announced significant progress in the investigation into Mutiso's killing, saying forensic examinations, intelligence gathering and other investigative methods had enabled detectives to identify the suspected mastermind, the motorcycle rider who allegedly transported the gunman and several other suspects believed to have participated in planning and executing the murder.
Investigators also alleged that rogue police officers played a role in the killing, claiming some coordinated the operation while another officer is suspected of supplying the firearm used in the fatal shooting.
Among those arrested is a police constable attached to Karinde Police Post under Kikuyu Police Station, whom detectives allege fired the fatal shots that killed Mutiso.
Amin further disclosed that Mutiso had survived an earlier assassination attempt on July 7 after two men riding a motorcycle allegedly pointed a gun at her along Ngong Road near Junction Mall. She managed to escape unharmed.
