At least five people have died while 21 others sustained injuries after a lorry ferrying traders to Kasaala Market overturned along the Ikutha-Kasaala Road in Kitui County.
The crash occurred at Kasarani, past Mutulu Shopping Centre, along the Ikutha-Mutulu-Kasaala Road after the lorry reportedly lost control and overturned.
Ikutha Sub-County Police Commander Raphael Mutiso confirmed that five people died at the scene, while several others were injured and required medical attention.
The fatalities comprised one man and four women. Their bodies were transferred to the mortuary at Mutomo Level 4 Sub-County Hospital.
Another 21 victims were injured in the accident and taken to Ikutha Level 4 Hospital, where they were receiving treatment.
Police had not established the circumstances that led to the lorry losing control by the time of publication. Investigations are expected to determine the events leading to the crash.
Images from the scene showed the white lorry overturned beside the road, with several victims on the ground as residents and emergency responders worked to assist those affected.
The Kitui crash comes amid growing concerns over road safety and a rise in fatal accidents across the country.
On Tuesday, September 1, several people were injured after at least three vehicles, including a Super Metro bus, were involved in a crash at Kinungi along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.
The accident occurred at around 9 pm after the vehicles collided on the busy highway, leaving several passengers injured and others trapped inside the wreckage.
Preliminary reports indicated that the Super Metro bus was travelling from Nairobi to Busia, while another bus was headed in the opposite direction when the collision occurred.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and rescued passengers trapped inside the wreckage before taking the injured to hospital.
Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) showed that Kenya recorded 2,150 road deaths in the first six months of 2026, representing an 11 per cent increase from the corresponding period in 2025.
