Former Chesikaki councillor and Mt Elgon parliamentary aspirant Nathan Wasama Masai was shot dead after armed attackers stormed his home in Tuikut, Cheptais, Bungoma County.
The attack happened on Thursday night, August 6, with preliminary reports indicating that two armed men raided his residence at around 8pm and opened fire several times before fleeing.
Wasama sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died from his injuries. Early investigations also suggest the attackers were riding on a motorcycle.
Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa confirmed the killing on Friday, August 7, mourning the former councillor and describing the incident as a tragedy.
“It is with profound sadness that I learned of the tragic death of former Councilor Mh—Nathan Wasama, who was reportedly shot at his home in Tuikut, Cheptais. My deepest condolences go to his family, friends, and the people of Mt. Elgon and the SDA church,” part of the condolence message read.
Barasa also urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and other security agencies to move swiftly and establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
Bungoma County Police Commander Anderson Njagi confirmed the incident, saying Wasama was shot by two gunmen and that investigations into the murder had already begun.
Njagi further warned that police would intensify operations against illegal firearms, noting that many unlicensed guns remain in the hands of civilians.
Wasama was a familiar political figure in Mt Elgon, having previously served as councillor for Chesikaki Ward under the former local government system before devolution in 2013.
He remained active in public affairs after the introduction of county governments, balancing business interests with local politics and community initiatives.
The former councillor had recently declared his intention to contest the Mt Elgon parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election, officially announcing his bid in June 2026. His return to elective politics had attracted attention from supporters who viewed him as an experienced grassroots leader.
Away from politics, Wasama was also known as a businessman, philanthropist and an active member of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church.
His death comes nearly two years after he survived another armed attack. In 2024, gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in the Kapcheshari area, with several bullets hitting the rear of the car. He escaped unharmed and later reported the incident to police.
The latest killing has sparked speculation among residents over whether the two attacks could be linked, although investigators have not established any connection.
As investigations continue, leaders and members of the public have condoled with Wasama's family while calling on authorities to ensure those behind the shooting are identified and brought to justice.
