The Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit is beginning to take shape, with fresh details emerging on how the specialised formation will operate once fully rolled out.
President William Ruto had earlier directed that the unit be established under a modern, technology-driven and highly mobile policing model aimed at strengthening security within the capital.
The directive followed a review of proposals for the formation, which derives its legal mandate from the Constitution. The law empowers the Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS) to create specialised formations under the existing Formed Units framework.
The government argues that Nairobi's rapid growth into a regional commercial, financial and diplomatic centre has brought more complex security demands, prompting the need for a dedicated metropolitan police unit that combines technology with a stronger and more responsive police presence.
Structure, Units and Roles of the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit
The new formation will be led by a Commandant reporting directly to the Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service (KPS), assisted by a Deputy Commandant.
Kamukunji Police Station has been proposed as the unit's headquarters and will house the Integrated Command and Communication Centre (IC4), which will coordinate security operations in real time.
The headquarters will also host a Multi-Agency Liaison Office to improve collaboration between the National Police Service, Nairobi County and other security agencies.
The command structure will cascade through Sub-Region and Sub-County Commanders before extending to police stations, Mtaa police posts and patrol bases.
These formations will handle specialised functions such as diplomatic protection, public safety, traffic management, law enforcement, criminal investigations and patrol operations.
The command system is designed to provide a clear reporting line from the Deputy Inspector General through the Commandant and Deputy Commandant, with the command centre and multi-agency liaison office acting as the central coordination hubs.
At the local level, Sub-Region and Sub-County Commanders will oversee deployments through police stations and neighbourhood policing units, enabling faster and more coordinated responses to security incidents across the Nairobi metropolitan area.
