The National Assembly has approved the appointment of former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion and Antonina Lentoijoni as members of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
MPs unanimously endorsed the two nominees on Tuesday, August 25, during the House's weekly proceedings, paving the way for them to assume their positions.
Their approval followed a recommendation by the National Assembly Education Committee, which vetted Sossion and Lentoijoni on Thursday, August 20, before endorsing their nominations.
President William Ruto nominated the two to serve as TSC commissioners following vacancies that had left the commission short of members.
Sossion's nomination, however, was temporarily caught up in a legal dispute after the High Court issued orders stopping Parliament from vetting him and Lentoijoni.
"A Conservatory order is hereby issued restraining the 2nd respondent, whether by itself, its Committees, officers, servants or agents, from considering, vetting or approving the nomination of the 5th and 6th respondents as Commissioners of the Teachers Service Commission pursuant to Notification of Presidential Action No XI of 2026 pending the hearing and determination of this application," the notice stated in part.
The court subsequently lifted the orders, allowing the nominees to proceed with the vetting process before the Education Committee.
Sossion's appointment marks his return to national leadership in the education sector after years at the forefront of teachers' union activities.
His nomination drew considerable attention because of his previous position as KNUT Secretary General and his long-standing involvement in advocating for teachers' interests.
During his vetting, the former nominated MP pledged to safeguard teachers' interests while ensuring the TSC fulfils its constitutional mandate.
The National Assembly's approval came days after MPs endorsed the nomination of Dancun Oburu as Chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
Oburu is expected to succeed Justice Ahmed Issack Hassan, who left the position after being appointed to the Court of Appeal of Kenya.
