Kiharu Member of Parliament (MP) and People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) leader Ndindi Nyoro has welcomed two United Democratic Alliance (UDA) politicians into his newly established political outfit.
Nyoro announced the defections on August 20, days after he formally left UDA and unveiled PPK as his new political vehicle ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The two politicians are Zack Macharia, the sitting Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Kiuu, popularly known as Githurai 45, in Ruiru Constituency, and Winnie Wambui, a Kiambu County MCA.
“Today we have received Members of the County Assembly from Kiambu County to the People’s Party; Hon Zack Macharia - Current MCA, Kiuu (Githurai 45), Ruiru Constituency and Winnie Wambui - Kiambu MCA,” Nyoro stated.
Adding “Both have defected from the Wheelbarrow party UDA."
The defections mark the first reported wave of politicians from the vote-rich Mt Kenya region joining Nyoro’s party as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
Nyoro formally announced his departure from UDA on August 18 during an event at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi, bringing an end to months of speculation about his political future.
He subsequently took over PPK and positioned the party as his new political vehicle, citing concerns over the government’s performance as one of the reasons behind his decision to leave UDA.
Nyoro criticised what he described as the early “trial and error” phase of governance, rising public debt and the pressure of meeting citizens’ expectations, saying governing had proved significantly more difficult than campaigning.
The Kiharu lawmaker said he would now work with opposition leaders and different political formations to help develop a shared national and economic agenda ahead of the 2027 polls.
His move comes amid a wider political shift in Mt Kenya, where several leaders have distanced themselves from UDA and moved closer to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
Among the high-profile politicians who have defected from UDA are Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata and Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha.
Gachagua and Nyoro are also increasingly navigating a potential political partnership ahead of 2027, with both indicating their willingness to work against the Ruto administration following Nyoro’s departure from UDA and the launch of PPK.
Gachagua has repeatedly said he is prepared to work with any political leader or formation pursuing the removal of President William Ruto from office in the 2027 election.
