MOJA Expressway has clarified that the Westlands Exit on the Nairobi Expressway remains open and fully operational, following confusion over maintenance works that coincided with heavy traffic along Waiyaki Way.
The clarification came after motorists experienced significant congestion on Waiyaki Way on Wednesday morning, with some attributing the traffic snarl-up to a diversion of vehicles from the Nairobi Expressway.
MOJA Expressway explained that the ongoing maintenance is being conducted beyond the Westlands toll exit, meaning motorists intending to leave the expressway at Westlands can continue using the exit normally.
"Please be informed that the Nairobi Westlands Exit remains fully open and operational. The scheduled maintenance is taking place past the exit, so traffic exiting at the toll station will not be affected," MOJA Expressway said.
The clarification followed an earlier advisory issued on September 7, which had indicated that motorists would face a temporary diversion at the Westlands Exit between September 8 and September 20.
In the notice, the company announced that maintenance and construction works would be undertaken on the elevated overpass deck after the Nairobi Westlands Exit during the period.
"Motorists using the Nairobi Expressway are informed of maintenance and construction works along the elevated overpass deck after the Nairobi Westlands Exit from 8 pm on September 8, 2026, to 5 pm on September 20, 2026," the company said.
The initial advisory further instructed motorists exiting at Westlands to use the lower A8 road along Waiyaki Way during the maintenance period. "During this period, motorists exiting at Nairobi Westlands are strictly instructed to join the lower A8 road on Waiyaki Way," it added.
The latest clarification means motorists using the Westlands toll station are not required to divert onto the lower A8 road because the maintenance works are taking place beyond the exit.
Waiyaki Way Traffic
Despite the clarification, motorists continued to encounter congestion along Waiyaki Way on Wednesday morning. The traffic situation has also been affected by ongoing construction works along the busy corridor, which have already reduced traffic capacity in parts of the road.
In June, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced the partial closure of a section of Waiyaki Way between Karuna Close and Westlands Roundabout to facilitate the construction of a footbridge. The closure was scheduled to remain in place until September 25, adding to disruptions experienced by motorists using the route.
The combination of the ongoing works on Waiyaki Way and maintenance on the Nairobi Expressway has heightened concerns among motorists over possible delays along the Westlands corridor.
However, MOJA Expressway maintained that the Westlands Exit itself remains accessible and operational, with the maintenance works confined to the section of the elevated highway beyond the toll station. The Nairobi Expressway maintenance is scheduled to continue until 5 pm on September 20, 2026.
