Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang'i has formally joined the Azimio Coalition after being appointed to the coalition's National Council, making him one of three new members added to its highest decision-making organ.
The announcement was made after an Azimio Council meeting on Monday afternoon, August 3, during which coalition leaders unveiled several resolutions intended to restructure the outfit ahead of its next phase of political activities.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Council Secretary General Caroli Omondi outlined key decisions relating to the coalition's leadership, membership and future plans.
Among the resolutions was the appointment of Matiang'i, former Meru Governor Peter Munya and former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti to the National Council, expanding the coalition's top leadership.
Caroli also revealed that the coalition would embark on a comprehensive rebranding exercise, signaling plans to adopt a new identity.
"The Council made a decision to admit two new members into its ranks. That is His Excellency Fred Matiangi, the Former Governor His Excellency Peter Munya and Honorable Senator Lenny Kivuti to become the new Council members. So there are three new members to the Council.," Caroli stated.
The coalition also invited one of its founding members, the Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K), led by one of the United Opposition co-principals, Eugene Wamalwa, to rejoin. Wamalwa, who attended the briefing, confirmed the party would return after completing its internal processes.
At the same time, former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi's Democratic Party (DP), Umoja Na Maendeleo and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) were formally invited to join the coalition.
Meanwhile, Azimio coalition leader Kalonzo Musyoka said discussions were ongoing with several like-minded parties as part of the coalition's wider rebranding plans.
He disclosed that the National Council had tasked him with engaging potential partners, including Rigathi Gachagua's Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), Martha Karua's People's Liberation Party (PLP) and the United Green Movement associated with former Chief Justice David Maraga.
Kalonzo further said the coalition was in talks with the Linda Mwananchi movement and expressed confidence in its efforts to register as a political party, saying its inclusion would strengthen the coalition.
"And of course, also, we are talking to Linda Mwananchi. So we wish them well as they push for the registration of Linda Mwanaichi as a political party," Kalonzo stated.
